Project
Adopt a Hero - Showing Aloha for Our Troops
2003 - 2005
Adopt-A-Hero began in 2003 to boost the morale of the thousands
of Hawaii-based troops deployed in Afghanistan, Iraq and surrounding
areas. SUFA contacted the teachers at all of the public and private
schools in Hawaii, asking them to participate in its efforts to
show appreciation for Hawaii's troops. Letters and drawings flooded
SUFA's mailbox from students all over Hawai'i. We were able to send
out hundreds of packages to remind our soldiers of the strong community
support behind their efforts.
The
second round of Adopt-a-Hero in 2005 also received an enthusiastic
response. Schools from East Honolulu to rural Kauai got their communities
involved in putting together meaningful packages with special messages
of thanks and caring for a soldier they had never met.
