Project Adopt a Hero - Showing Aloha for Our Troops

Aloha! We need your help with our “Project: Adopt-a-Hero”. Thousands of Hawaii-based troops are now in Afghanistan, Iraq and surrounding areas. Let’s boost their morale and show all of these brave soldiers our appreciation by sending them a package of local goodies and a thoughtful, personal letter/photo/drawing from supportive families.

Adopt-A-Hero began in 2003. SUFA contacted the teachers at all of the public and private schools in Hawaii, asking them to participate in its efforts to show appreciation for Hawaii’s troops. Letters and drawings flooded SUFA’s mailbox from students all over Hawai’i. We were able to send out many packages to remind our soldiers of the strong community support behind their efforts.

The second round of Adopt-a-Hero (2005) has received an enthusiastic response already. Schools from East Honolulu to rural Kauai are getting their communities involved in putting together meaningful packages with special messages of thanks and caring for a soldier they have never met.

How can you help?

Prepare a small package of local snacks. Include a “Dear Soldier” letter expressing appreciation for the sacrifices being made to protect our country. Make it a family affair—kids can draw a picture, write a note, photo, etc. Send it to Stand Up For America (SUFA) and we’ll mail it for you, or call us (682-0618) and we’ll give you an address of soldiers you can send to directly. Be sure to include your name and return address. The troops are busy, but some may want to write back.

Make a contribution to help cover postage costs (All contributions are tax deductible) Or, send a contribution of $20 and we’ll prepare and mail package on your behalf.

Our troops have specifically requested these items: small snack food packages, anti-bacterial wipes, and, more than anything else- a little taste of home: crack seed, mochi crunch, li hing mui, dried mango, taro chips, shortbread cookies, mac nuts, etc. No home baked goods will be accepted. Please avoid foods containing chocolate (that can melt) and things that may leak. Small packages are best.
